Confusion Of Tongues @ LordsOfMetal.nlRating: 85 of 100
The Erfurter travelling-party Ba'al are one of the leading contradictors of the fact that a creative mix of different kinds of metal usually turns out to be a ghoulish and failed experiment. Contradicted and backed up with some rock-solid arguments, I should add.
Although far-fetched comparisons usually do not do justice to a band, one might imagine this musical bastard being the result of mixing Bolt Thrower and Bloodbath, combined with some of the later Amon Amarth and In Flames. The latter has been ripped straight out of the bands bio, since In Flames has never touched my stereo before (and never bloody will!). I would like to add Sepultura from the 'Nation'-era to this list. The powerful voice of vocalist Julian Fink is very versatile but it's his Derrick Green-like scream which really puts a mark on the music, both in power and clarity. Preceding keywords are also relevant concerning the album's massive production.
It would make sense if these slightly modern-ish sounds make the average metal-puritan frown but Ba'al is just like a swarm of bees; be tolerant to them, and Ba'al will be tolerant to you. No hit-potential yet but, in general, 'Confusion Of Tongues' makes a very impressive album.
